Okay, so I never do movie review, but I feel that this one I must!!! So me and my 3 friends decided to take all of our friends to this movie. Before going to it I youtubed the trailer. I knew it was Japanamation (which I don't entirely love), and it was the same director that did Spirited Away (this was a movie I saw a long time ago, that was extremely weird and didn't make any sense. So many people loved it because it had all these meanings, but I didn't get them and so I didn't like it). But I thought, 1- it's about a fish, Mekynzie loves fish, 2- It's by Disney, so it has to be good, and 3 - It has a good cast, so it probably is not half bad. Well let me tell you the run down.
Okay, so first of all, Mekynzie loved it. I think most the kids that were there loved it. It has great colors and fun animation and she was captivated the whole time, laughing and squealing with delight. Now, if you understand any of the story, you many be laugh your head off at the craziness of it, or be entirely disturbed (which is how me and my friends were!)
Here's the basic rundown. This little boy who lives with his mom while his dad is fishing out at Sea, finds this weird looking fish who is magical. The fish falls in love with the boy. So after her human dad who lives in the ocean takes her back, she drinks a magic potion and is able to turn human and goes and lives with the boy. The problem is that because she is supposed to be a fish, nature is off balance and so the moon has gotten to close to the earth, and the ocean is swallowing the whole village up. (which most of the movie is this natural distaster happening.)
Okay, so I know that Disney didn't make this, they just put their name on it to endorse it and get money off of it, well that was obvious because this did not have the happy go lucky disney values like all of their other cartoons. Here were some of the greatest moments of the movie.
1. The mom finds out that the Dad(who was supposed to be coming home that night) will no longer be coming home. What does she d0? What every great disney parent does - breaks out a Beer. I just loved it in Aladdin when Jasmine runs away and her dad goes and gets drunk!?*?* So that made me laugh, but not the best part.
2. So the mom (I just love this mom) is trying to get home with her 5 year old in their smart car. She gets to a bridge and the police tell her that the way to her home is flooded and they will get swallowed up by the ocean. Well she doesn't want to take the long way home, so she ignores the police and starts going through this dangerous pass, with the ocean waves right behind her. Such a good mom.
3. Oh but she gets better because they make it to the house, only to find this fish that the boy once had (Ponyo), had turned into a little girl. Oh so the mom didn't question this one bit and just invited her in.
4. Well once in the house the whole town had flooded except for their house and some others on top of the mountain. Well the mom wanted to go help the people at the nursing home, so while there is a natural disaster going on, she asked her little boy to stay all alone with this strange fish girl. (okay so my friends 5 year old was disturbed by this the whole movie. Even she couldn't comprehend what kind of crazy mom would leave her 5 year old all alone during this scary time!!) What, disney you have to be kidding me!!
5. So finally the little boy and his fish girl go in a boat and explore. So the whole town is completely underwater and are all going for refuge. They pack some food and along the way find another family with a baby. They want to share the food with the little baby, but of course babies only drink milk. Well this random mom of the baby asked if she could have the food to make milk for her baby. (okay first of all if you saw two 5 year olds all alone after a distaster wouldn't you be a little more concerned, let alone take their only food.) Augh!!
Well there are many more crazy happenings in this movie. It will drive mothers especially crazy at the horrible parenting skills of this mother!! But kids will love it. So all in all, it was a good laugh, the kids had a great time, so it wasn't a total bust!!

Alicia's Movie Review

Haha.. Alicia, you crack me up :) You are right, it is not Disney.. it is classic Miyazaki and all of his animes have nature-based themes. The story is not about the mom, but about the fish girl & her best friend. It is basically a Japanese Little Mermaid, but it has much more to it. Having watched the majority of Miyazaki films (thanks to Ian), I get where he's going with his storylines & though they don't always make sense in some perspective, the overall theme makes sense. But, reading your review of the movie cracked me up b/c I was now seeing it from a non-anime fan's point of view and can totally see where you are coming from. If you do ever watch any of his other movies, though, notice that they all have to do with children being the heroes/heroins... the parents are usually not important in the grand scheme of things.
That's hysterical! Thanks... we won't be wasting our money... better spent on New Moon anyway!
Alicia, that is the best movie review! I'm still laughing so hard! I'm glad I found out from you what to expect before even thinking about going to the theater to see it. I'm sure William would enjoy it too but we'll wait for the DVD. :)
Miss you!
